New for 2020/21

Autumn Term at Walnut Yoga

Well where did the year go!!! As you will no doubt know I have not been able to teach yoga for most of this year and I have missed you all so much. Since my last class in the middle of March the studio has been empty and waiting for the return of my lovely and hopefully some new students.

After concentrating on catching up on all of the jobs in the garden during the lovely lockdown weather, the studio has been cleaned from ‘Top to Bottom’. There are some new additions (hand sanitisers, cleaning equipment), some things re-arranged and put into storage (packing away blocks, cushions etc to make more room for social distancing), the garden tidied, planted and given a lick of paint.

All in all, come September, I think we’re finally going to be able to open the door and welcome you all back, even though it will be in a slightly different format.

Whilst in Lockdown, like many I have been given some time to assess how life has been and how I would like my work/life balance to be, 2019 was a very busy year for lots of us and for me I was burning the candle at both ends as well as the middle.  This in turn brought some underlying health issues that I suffer from to come to the fore but these have now, during our enforced time off, thankfully begun to go into remission. My body and mind have had the much-needed rest and recuperation they needed and I was ignoring and I am feeling much better.

With this in mind I have decided to make some changes to the times and days that I work to allow for rest and family time as well as time for my own yoga practice (Please see Classes).

I have also been looking at how we can still practice yoga safely in class with social distancing.  This will mean smaller class sizes as well as the practice of ‘One to One’ sessions in the larger downstairs studio (Please See COVID-19 Update).

There will also have a limit on numbers so booking will be essential.

As usual the terms will be for 10 weeks with breaks for the half-term and holidays and this years Autumn term will start on 10th September 2020.

Seminars

In past years I have loved holding end of term seminars in the Studio.  They are a lovely way to engage deeper with students and into yoga. These sessions tend to be more focused and relaxing as they are longer than a normal class. We are able to really spend time on meditation and relaxation as well as living in the moment and making new friends.  In the busy lives that we tend to lead in this century, this is proving to be a great benefit to us and those around us.

Due to the Lockdown of Covid-19, unfortunately I had to cancel this years’ Spring and Summer seminars, but I am hoping with social distancing to be able to bring them back in time for Christmas. With everything that has happened this year more than ever taking time to look after ourselves is even more important.

Seminars are held on Saturdays or Sundays (dates and times to be confirmed). Each session will include some rejuvenating yoga asana (physical practice) appropriate to the time of year, as well as meditation and a lovely long relaxation.

The sessions will end with light refreshments (teas/coffees and cordials as well as light and healthy snacks) all held in the lovely surroundings of Walnut Studios.

Places will be limited to adhere to Covid-19 social distancing so it really is important to book early to avoid disappointment.

New Event

Teaching at the North Yorkshire Yoga Federation

Saturday 10th April 2021 10 am – 12pm The Village Hall, Stockton on the Forest, York.

One again I have been asked to teach for the North Yorkshire Yoga Federation at one of its regular monthly Saturday Yoga sessions that are held in Stockton on the Forest, York. It was a huge confidence boost as a new teacher to be asked before and I am very honoured to have been asked again.

My session is once again in the diary for April which is one of my favourite months of the year. After the Spring we have had this year with cancellations of yoga sessions due to Covid-19, I am very much looking forward to being with lots of yogis just as the world will be beginning to awaken from its winters sleep. I will be devising a joyful and uplifting session to help us welcome in the new season.

Please get in touch if you would like more information about the above or The North Yorkshire Yoga Federation please see my Contacts/Links page.

NEW FOR 2018!

Loving Winter & Looking forward to Spring at Walnut Yoga

The Nights are still dark and we probably still have some very wintery weather on the way but I love looking forward to Spring during the cold months of the year.

At home - I begin to plan my garden and look forward to seeing the trees in bud and the Spring bulbs that we planted in Autumn push their way through the frozen ground. In the studio - I love to plan my lessons for the new term. During the Autumn Term we have been reflecting on the business of our lives and trying to bring balance to our everyday through the practice of Yin Yoga.

Moving through Winter and into Spring we will again be moving with Nature into new seasons and the world around us will be opening up to the Sun and welcoming us to the New Year. I’ll be planning to bring in a few more dynamic practices to help build up our energy including some Yang yoga flows like the Sun Salutations which will hopefully awaken the sun a little earlier!

Remember resting is just as important as doing and listening to our bodies even more important, so if you have no energy for asana, enjoy practicing some yoga breathing and mediation or snuggling up with a cosy blanket & hot chocolate!!

Walnut Studios is now open again after the Christmas Break and I look forward to seeing you soon Sx

Spring and Summer Seminars

For the past three years I have found it so enjoyable to hold the Christmas seminars. The sessions tend to be more focused and relaxing as they are longer than a normal class. We are able to really spend time on meditation and relaxation as well as living in the moment and making new friends. In the busy lives that we tend to lead in this century, this is proving to be a great benefit to us and those around us.

Therefore after some lovely feedback from students who have attended my Christmas Seminars, later this year I have decided to hold a Spring as well as a Summer Seminar during 2018.

Both dates will be held on Saturday mornings (dates to be confirmed) and will be from 10am-12pm.

Places will be limited to 10 students so it really is important to book early to avoid disappointment.

Autumn at Walnut Yoga

Dear All,

Well, where has this year gone!!! The seasons of Spring and Summer have flown by and now I find we are in the beautiful Autumn already.

The clocks will soon be turning back an hour and the night’s drawing in and after the busy rush of summer we find we are slowing down and moving into a more cosy time of reflection and contemplation and enjoy rest.  We are in a time of change and once again Mother Nature shows us some of her greatest moments of beauty.

In this dormant time of the year it is the perfect time to take stock to live more in the moment, we can bring yoga into our lives, by aligning our energies to the natural rhythms of the earth and the suns cycles.

Classes have now begun at Walnut Studios for the Autumn Term and I have devised my lesson plans to reflect this time of change and to bring balance to our busy lives, the active and passive, the logical and intuitive, the conscious and unconscious, the Yang and the Yin.  From this place of unity new doors open, new directions and new possibilities are revealed.

Winter at Walnut Yoga

Hi All

I hope you are all well and had a wonderful Christmas and enjoyed all that that season brings!!

Now the busyness is over and with all of the excess of Eating, Drinking and being Merry, I find that sometimes we all feel pressured to rush back into our routine of Diets, Detoxing and Decorating. Diets & Detoxing because of all of the lovely food and Decorating because the house may seem a bit dull now we have taken down the decorations.

Between Christmas and New Year we weren’t actually too busy and we had some lovely afternoons lazing around reading books and watching films as a family and going for walks in the countryside. We often watch TV together but it’s usually in the evening and I must admit that I will often fall asleep and lose the plot and as for reading a book cover to cover!?! Spending time together watching old family favourites or going walking in the unexpected winter sunshine was lovely. We were living in the present – going with the flow.

I have since found I am back to rushing about, my list of jobs is again never ending and I seem to have already have plans running into the summer!! Planning is good but we need to allow time for the present.

Therefore this term, which starts back on Thursday 12th January 2017, I have devised some lesson plans that do incorporate detoxing, but these are not just only for our bodies but also to detox our minds from the pressures we place on ourselves. The aim will be to detox and revitalise our bodies and minds to enable us to live in the present moment. For in reality this is the only time we have - so we should enjoy every moment!

'Be like a Flower and Turn to Face the Sun'

Saturday 8th April 2017 10 am – 12pm

Poppleton Community Centre, Poppleton, York

Last year I was asked if I would like to teach for the NYYF at one of its regular monthly Saturday Yoga sessions that are held in Poppleton, York. I am very honoured to have been asked as I have not been teaching as long as some in the York area and though I have taught one of their Summer School sessions, those that attend are mostly teachers with lots of years of experience of teaching yoga. My session is in the diary for April which is one of my favourite months of the year. As its spring, and the world around us is just beginning to awaken from its winters sleep, I am devising an uplifting session to help us welcome in the new season. A time to wonder at the newness and beauty of nature and light as the world around us comes back to life and we are seeing it as if for the first time - so I'm calling it 'Be like a Flower and Turn to Face the Sun'

Past Event // ‘Christmas Presence - with Walnut Yoga’

A Special Yoga, Meditation and Relaxation session to help with the build up to Christmas.

I thought it would be lovely if we aimed to give ourselves a ‘Christmas Present’ this year. Some time out to de-stress and to help keep us in the present moment so that we could enjoy a happy healthy holiday season.

The session was held on Saturday 17th December 2016 and included Asana, Pranayama, Meditation and a lovely Yoga Nidra. We finished the session with session with Non-Alcoholic Mulled Wine/Coffee/Tea and some tasty treats to get us in the mood for Christmas!

We had a lovely session and the Yoga and Treats went well together and I’ve had some wonderful feedback. Thank you to everyone for their warmth and companionship and for making the job of teaching so enjoyable.

Past Event // Fall Back Into Yoga This Autumn

Classes will be starting back on the 15th September so I thought I would drop you all a note to let you know the revised term dates for the new term, especially as today, 1st September is the first day of Autumn.  I know this means that Winter, when nature goes into hibernation will be here before we know it, but Autumn is still my favourite season.  The colours of the leaves, changing from their myriad of greens to the bold and warming colours of Reds, Oranges and Yellows, are so beautiful to behold. Together with the wonder that the days can still be filled with sunshine and warmth but the drawing in of the nights bring that cosy feeling to our evenings with some awe inspiring sunsets makes this for me, the loveliest time of year.

Ian and I have been doing some finishing touches to the main room and another bonus is that we have managed to fulfil our aim of finally landscaping the Zen Garden behind the Studio.  With the help of some very lovely birthday presents and my husband’s brilliant building skills it is looking very peaceful and calming,  so we will be able to watch whilst nature makes her changes as we do our practice.

As I said I have had to make a few changes to the dates but we still have a full 10 weeks of yoga ahead of us and I have really enjoyed devising some lesson plans to help us through the transition of the seasons.

Please pass on to any friends/family that you feel might be interested or benefit from yoga.

Walnut Studios, Strensall - Now Open

Past Event // Ease in to Christmas

I would like to say a huge thankyou for the great turnout for the Ease into Christmas workshop held in December 2015. I have received some really nice feedback and would love to hold the same event again next year. If this is something that interests you then please get in touch.

Take a look at some of the pictures of the event here.

Past Event // Yoga For Carers

Introduction to Yoga, Relaxation and Meditation for Carers

Set of 6 Free Sessions

An exciting opportunity to access and benefit from learning  Relaxation and Breathing techniques as well as ways to raise your energy levels.

These classes include basic yoga postures and flows and basic breathing techniques, to raise energy levels and an introduction to meditation to help with the low energy that can result from stress.

There will also be Tea/Coffee and Cake included at the end of the session, a great opportunity for you to have a chat and meet other carers.

“Giving time to your-self is so beneficial. The classes are not only about physical and mental well -being but also enabling family carers to raise their energy levels and to bring balance to what is a very busy life.”

This free event ran during the summer of 2015 and was a great success. Here are a couple of quotes from some of the students who attended.

"Time for myself. Taught me to relax and learn relaxation and well being - A big thankyou."

"This was the best thing I have done in ages and so helpful on so many levels - exercise, relaxation, meeting people, taking things to work at home. So well Organised and supportive."

"Please offer this again."

This was able to run with the help of a small grant from York Carers Centre and York City Council in 2015 and hopefully will run again in the future if funding is available and there is enough interest.
